Po sto letih je bil Slovencem v Italiji vrnjen Narodni dom v Trstu. Za to sta si vse od skupne položitve vencev k spomeniku padlim Slovencem v prvi svetovni vojni v Doberdobu leta 2017 prizadevala predsednika Slovenije in Italije Borut Pahor in Sergio Mattarella. 13. julija 2020 sta se na Bazovici z roko v roki in s položitvijo vencev k dvema spomenikoma poklonila žrtvam fašističnega in komunističnega nasilja. To spravno dejanje je pustilo močan pečat v prizadevanju obeh narodov za sožitje v evropskem duhu.

After a hundred years, Narodni dom (National Hall) in Trieste, Italy was returned to the Slovenian minority in Italy. Presidents of Slovenia and Italy, Borut Pahor and Sergio Mattarella, had been working towards this goal since their joint wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial for Slovenian soldiers who fell in World War I in Doberdob in 2016. On July 13, 2020, at Bazovizza, Italy the two presidents, hand in hand, laid wreaths at two monuments to pay tribute to the victims of fascist and communist violence. This reconciliatory act left a strong mark on the efforts of both nations inspiring harmony in the spirit of Europe.
