President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, proposed at the Munich Security Conference that the European Commission unconditionally grants Bosnia and Herzegovina the candidate status for membership in the European Union. Justifying this unprecedented decision, he cited geopolitical reasons - which only few days later became intensified by the Russian aggression in Ukraine. Initially, the proposition was met with surprise and misunderstanding, but soon, particularly due to the efforts of the Slovenian government, it gained favor, leading to the decision to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina the candidate status by the end of the same year.
